Art on Skin: Abstract Brushstrokes Around the Shoulder

I choose to let art live on skin. This abstract shoulder tattoo takes its direction from the traces of a brush: elongated marks, changes in line weight and open spaces that let each gesture stand on its own. The starting point is the movement of a brush across a surface, translated into a composition around the body.

Brushstroke marks as a visual language

The marks do not need to form a recognisable object. Their direction, width and spacing become the subject. Longer strokes carry the eye across the shoulder, while narrower lines create a different sense of pace. Together, they give the blackwork a rhythm without turning it into a repeating pattern.

This brushstroke-inspired approach leaves room for the individual character of each mark. The design is read through its gestures and the relationships between them, rather than through a literal image or a written message.

Composing around the shoulder

A shoulder is a changing surface. Its curve affects how a line appears from the front, side and back, and the composition is seen differently as the body turns. The direction of the marks therefore matters as much as their shape: they need to work with that form.

Negative space is part of the design. Leaving skin visible between the black marks separates the strokes and gives their paths room to be seen. Filling every gap would change the balance and the sense of movement.

My custom abstract tattoo work in Melbourne explores this relationship between expressive marks, placement and anatomy. For a brushstroke tattoo, the aim is to consider how the gestures belong to a particular part of the body, rather than treating the skin as a flat sheet of paper.
